Students: Sample of Off-Campus Learning Agreement

Participants: Faculty Sponsor and Student
Objective: To design and reduce to writing the essential elements of an off-campus experience
Academic Major: Sociology
Learning Experience Site: District of Columbia Help Center, Inc.

Part I: Learning Objective

  1. Learn about organization of a community service program.
  2. Experience giving a service to people in need.
  3. Learn how to work cooperatively with others on a common project.
  4. Learn about people in a realistic way to form a helping relationship. Learn about people's relationships in a family and in an urban setting.

Part II: Tasks to Meet Objectives

  1. Help in updating a referral directory and building a resource center for DC residents.
  2. Interview people within agencies offering services to DC residents.
  3. Participate in administering the Meals on Wheels and other Title III and Title VII services to the elderly.
  4. Read up on the laws concerning the funding and requirements in services to the elderly.
  5. Take part in screening people for the program.
  6. Participate on the juvenile advisory board.
  7. Complete project on nutrition education for the aging.
  8. Spend time with elderly people at the nursing home to get a sense of their needs; begin to understand more critically the laws and programs to service the aging population.

Part III: Criteria for Evaluation

  1. Journal of my thoughts on my experiences and the progress of the organization. Include the following: a. problems I am encountering, b. new learning (about myself as well as the experience)
  2. Discussion with other Sociology students
  3. Discussion with instructors
  4. Field learning project
  5. Resume
  6. Site supervisor evaluation
